This lot comes from 2 females producers, supported by the Bean Voyage organization: Cleofas Veneroso Alvarado (farm: El Palmar) and María Teresa Veneroso Cuacua (farm: El Manguito), both located in the Huatusco, Veracruz region.
We let themselves do the talking:
1. How did your relationship with coffee begin and what inspired you to dedicate yourself to this?
Cleofas: "It began with my father, as from a young age, he taught us to dedicate ourselves to coffee work. And it's coffee itself that inspires me to dedicate myself to this, from when I was little, then when I got married, and until now as I continue with it."
Maria: "I began harvesting coffee because of my grandparents, and they processed it themselves, from there I became interested in harvesting and processing it. My goal is to roast and sell ground coffee."
2. What is the most special or significant moment of your day when working with coffee?
Cleofas: "The most special moment for me is when I'm delivering the coffee, and people get to know it."
Maria: "The work of the coffee transformation process."
3. What challenges have you faced as a coffee producer and how have you overcome them?
Cleofas: "The biggest challenge I've faced is that we don't get paid well for our coffee, and the work we do is a lot, and they don't value it, paying us very little. And I've overcome it because we have to keep going forward, we don't throw in the towel, and I hope that with this program, they'll support us a little more, and we can continue learning a lot from this."
Maria: "Selling the parchment coffee, and when it doesn't have a good price, then we wait for a time when it can be sold at a good price."
4. Is there any family tradition or special practice that you follow on the farm or at the processing facility?
Cleofas: "Well, the tradition is to continue with coffee, and lately we've been accustomed to making the "viuda for the pickers," which is a meal we prepare for them in gratitude for helping us with the harvest."
Maria: "It would be the washed coffee process, since that's how the grandparents did it and it's what we continue to do."
5. What does or would it mean to you to see your coffee reach different parts of the world?
Cleofas: "Well, it would mean a dream that would make me very happy, to see my coffee reach other parts of the world."
Maria: "A dream I have is to have a place where I can sell roasted and ground coffee as well as having a brand for the product."
Women have always worked in coffee, but have faced difficulties in getting recognition for their work or even possibilities to move up the chain, even though they are inhereting farms and/or taking up managing roles. Bean Voyage supports female producers in different countries in Central America, by helping them with education and support, to grow their companies and build more equity in the coffee world. Learn about about Cleofas' journey here as well.
